Forget Skype! A new project, called the Gizmo Project, is offering FREE calls (PC to PC, PC to Mobile and PC to Landline) to a lot of countries!!! All you have to do is download their software, register yourself and add all your phone numbers (check out if the phone numbers to your area is free or not here). Next off tell all your friends to do the same and add them on your contact list. Heck, if they are not IT savvy like you are, just register for them (please make sure you get some sort of approval first, as I do not want to be responsible for presenting this idea for it to be used for the wrong reasons) and call them using Gizmo on their mobile phone and landline for free (to those countries listed). I tried making a call to a Malaysian mobile phone number and it was crystal clear! Bye-bye Skype, and World, prepare for the next revolution in VoIP: the Gizmo Project! Cheers to everyone there

EDIT: Some additional info that I managed to get: Somehow Gizmo scales your talk time based on how many people you have on your contact list. The algorithm they used is not disclosed but I think that if you keep your list to a minimum, you should be fine.

What Makes a Good IT Store?

July 21st 2006 14:29
There are probably thousands of stores out there dealing with IT products, be it PCs, software, various digital gadgets to more specialized hardware for the hardcore computer enthusiasts. My question is this: What would make an IT store worth going into and making a purchase apart from offering a low price? Would it be service? Trustworthiness? Technical support? Office hours? Please post as many ideas as you like, as I would like to know what the best IT store would have. Who knows, maybe some store owners out there will read this and you might benefit from it

Get Rid of Spyware

July 19th 2006 17:46
Some of you have probably come across spyware that could not be removed by a mere antivirus scan. Well, before you start trashing your PC, try following these couple of steps and see if it is removable.
1. Start your PC in “Safe Mode”. To do this, reboot your PC and before the Windows XP loading screen appears, hit the “F8” key (you can do this a couple of times just to be sure). Then select “Safe Mode” (its safer than safe mode with networking) and wait for windows to load up

Have a hard disk you want to sell or just want to wipe it clean? Well a normal format won’t do the job as there still might be bits and pieces of data that can be salvaged. What you need to do is a low level format, or a zero wipe. I have been scouring the web for a good tool, and finally found one that I am really happy with. It’s the HDD Low Level Format Tool from HDDGuru. Just be careful you don’t format the wrong drive

Sometimes after an automatic (or semi automatic) update in Windows XP, you get the annoying “Restart Now” option that keeps popping up. Well, there’s a way to stop that message from popping up. Just go to your “Control Panel – Administrative Tools - Services”. You will then see a list of services on the right. Look out for “Automatic Updates”. Once you found it, right click it and select “Stop”. This should get rid of the popup until you really want to restart your PC.

Keep Your PC Secure

July 9th 2006 08:48
Last night one of my friends got infected with a Trojan. Upon taking a look at his PC I saw how poorly he has setup his security and defense against the ever growing viruses/malware/spyware available on the internet. Therefore I decided to write this to teach some of you to protect your PC against most of the common attacks on your home PC

Ever worry that there will be a day where you would need to format your PC due to almost-impossible-to-remove viruses or malware, or just that you need to do some major upgrading of your hardware? Think of all that data you need to backup; documents from work/school, your precious MP3 collection, digital pictures or your prized pr0n collection. Well most of them would be scattered throughout your “My Documents” folder or on your “Desktop”. Now wouldn’t it be great if you can save these 2 locations onto another drive/partition? Well it’s actually quite simple to do.

For your “My Documents” folder, just create a folder in another partition/drive with the same name (preferably, I store mine in “X:\Personal Settings\My Documents”). Once you’ve done that, right click on the original “My Documents” folder (either on your desktop or your “Start Menu”) and select properties. Click on the “Move” button and navigate to the new folder you just created. A dialog box will then ask you whether you want to move the existing content in your “My Documents” folder into the new location, and choose yes if you do want to or no if you want to start fresh.

There are many ways to store data nowadays, ranging from CD-R/RWs to USB drives to portable hard disks. If you have just a few files you would like to carry around, a USB drive is sufficient. However, if you carry a PDA or any other portable device that utilizes a SD card, the Sandisk Ultra II SD Plus SD card is the way to go. If I'm not mistaken, Buffalo also has something similar in the works.

If you are more hardcore and carry a LOT more than what a mere USB drive can carry, then a portable hard disk drive (HDD) is for you. The first thing you want to consider is what interface (for the casing) do you want for it; usually USB (2.0 is the choice here, as it is a LOT faster than USB 1.1), Firewire (IEEE 1394), networked enabled (the availability of a Ethernet, RJ45, cable to connect to a network switch, router or hub to share with peers on your network), or all of them. The more interfaces you have on the external casing, the more expensive it is going to be.

Have a PC up and running? Well if your configuration has at least a 1.5GHz processor, 512MB of RAM (1024MB recommended) and a decent graphic card with at least 64MB of RAM (You can get a decent one for less than AUD100, check out MSY), you can. There are two options: either get a PCI TV tuner or a USB one. However, if you opt for the USB one, make sure it supports USB2.0, as a USB 1.1 will not be a good choice. It’s also easier to install; just pop it in, install the software and tune away. However, the PCI versions do have an edge over their USB brethren; they hog less resource and have better decoding power (if u plan to record shows in high-definition clearly).

I would personally recommend the USB option, as you can easily take it with you (say overseas or to the *ahem* office), and if you have a laptop too, convert it into a portable DVR. There are a lot of choices out there, some really expensive like the DVICO ones and some cheaper. One of the cheapest ones I've seen is the one from Dealsdirect.com.
