Applications That Slow Your Windows XP (SP2) PC Down
September 12th 2006 02:42
Almost every Windows XP user out there would have some background applications running, be it antivirus software or internet chat applications. And if your PC is relatively old, you would notice your PC getting more and more sluggish when you install new applications or update older ones. Now wouldn’t it be useful if there was a rough guide to say what applications cause the most system delay? It would greatly help users understand more about how to speed up their PCs either by choosing different alternative applications or by uninstalling applications that is not needed anymore. Having said that, the graph gives a rough guide to system hogging applications.
By looking at the graph, it can easily be seen that Norton Internet Security 2006 (I reckon it would be similar with the 2007 edition) slows down your PC the most. This would not be apparent if your PC is relatively fast, but would greatly affect slower/older ones. An alternative (although more lightweight) to NIS 2006 would be NOD32. Yahoo! Instant Messenger can now be replaced by Windows Live Messenger, as it now supports connection to Yahoo! Messenger. Also with Windows XP, there really isn’t a need to install WinZip, as Windows XP has native support for .zip documents.
