Clean Your C: Drive
August 19th 2006 10:01
Most people neglect to clean up their C drive. You might have a whopping 200GB of HDD space but it is still good practice to clean up the junk that windows leaves behind. Cleaning up your C Drive will not only free up space, but will also make indexing faster (search functions) and perform slightly better.
The first step is to use the “Disk Cleanup” utility that Windows XP has. To do this:
1. Go to "My Computer"
2. Right click on your C Drive and select "Properties"
3. Select "Disk Cleanup"
4. Wait for a while and it will give you a few options. Make sure you tick "Temporary Internet Files" and "Temporary Files", as they are usually the biggest directories.
Next try the ATF Cleaner by Attribune. It will help you clean up other stuff that you might have missed in the “Disk Cleanup” utility. You might also want to use Microsoft’s Live OneCare Clean Up Utility. This utility takes a bit long if you have a slow internet connection, but it will help clean up your registry pretty safely.
